The Assocjazzjoni Voluntarji Lourdes (AVL) was formed to assist the sick to travel from Malta to visit the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Lourdes at the Grotto where on the 11th February 1858 she appeared for the first time to the simple peasant girl Bernadette Soubirous.
Among the Objectives of the Association are:
The Association is a voluntary, independent, autonomous and philanthropic organisation, embracing the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Association is a non-profit making organisation.
The Association shall promote universal devotion towards Our Lady, organise or co-ordinate pilgrimages for the sick to Lourdes and other Sanctuaries, and collect funds for these purposes.
The Association shall bring together dedicated persons inspired by charity to voluntarily assist the sick throughout such pilgrimages.
The Role of AVL
The Assocjazzjoni Voluntarji Lourdes was formed on the 18th April 2001 by a group of persons, most of whom had travelled for many years as voluntary helpers during pilgrimages for the sick to Lourdes.
There are often cases when persons are not capable of travelling on their own to visit in pilgrimage the Holy Shrine and to bathe in the water as was the express wish of Our Lady. This may be due to their physical or mental condition or due to their scarce economic means. AVL offers the opportunity to these persons to fulfill this wish.
AVL organises functions throughout the year to raise funds to enable it to take eligible persons who need financial assistance, and its volunteers accompany the sick to assist them throughout the journey in all their needs.
AVL also organises social and religious functions to promote devotion to Our Lady.
